The ground-breaking ceremony for Kenda Rubber’s new plant in Taiwan was held on May 31 in the Yunlin Technology Industrial Park in Yunlin County, with President Ying Ming Yang and Vice President Jimmy Yang in attendance. The company plans to construct a 6,000 square meter structure plant on a 15,000 Square meter site, with production scheduled to start at the beginning of 2017. The firm will invest a total of NT$1,100 million in the project.

The new Taiwan plant will start production with a Workforce of 100 people. After completion of the new plant in Douliu, Kenda is planning to transfer machines and equipment for the motorcycle tires and air packs now produced at the Cihtong plant in the northern part of Yunlin County to Douliu, which will also produce tires for industrial use. Meanwhile, the Cihtong plant will add production lines for car tires to expand its daily output to 5,000 pieces.

The construction of the new plant in Douliu was directly driven by the growing demand of tires in the north American market. In July last year, the U.S. government decided to impose a large anti-dumping duty and anti-subsidiary duty against Chinese tire makers, claiming that dumping sales of China-made car tires and small truck tires have significantly damaged the local industry. These AD measures have made exports of China-made tires practically impossible. And as a result, Kenda has received some concentrated orders, including those for two months ahead. Kenda Group plants in China (Shenzhen, Kunshan and Tianjin) and in Taiwan have been operating in full scale but cannot meet the demand, especially for car tires.

The company is now planning to expand the supply capacity of both the Taiwan headquarters plant and the Tianjin plant to 10,000 pieces (daily) from the second half of this year. Exports to the U.S. are expected to increase 20 percent. “By expanding production at the two plants, we can expect Kenda Group’s sales to increase by NT$ 1,500 million in 2016,” said a company staff.
