If you are considering getting an electric motor assisted bicycle, or ebike, you have a few options to choose from. No longer limited sole to road bikes and light weight long distance travelers, ebikes are showing up in a wide variety of models, including a large number of electric mountain bikes. What's that? Motor assist on a mountain bike, you say? But is not that like cheating? Well no, not unless you are in a competition. If you are just out there to enjoy your ride or get from place to place efficiently, an ebike is the perfect extra boost to your ride that will let you go farther, longer and have more energy over the course of your ride, allowing you to enjoy the journey a little more.
If you are doing any trail riding, an electric mountain bike is great for getting up that extra steep hill or going longer distances. Because the electric motor works to support you as you pedal, you can still be in complete control of the bike, without feeling like you are just along for the ride. Or, if you have gone a long way and think you need a breather but you do not want to take a break just yet, switch your bike over into power on demand mode and ride it like a motorcycle for a little while to give yourself a break from pedaling.
Ebikes are designed to have very long lasting batteries, and many of them have the option to carry extra batteries to swap out during your trip for an even longer time out on the road or on the trail. Remember, these batteries are not exactly featherweights, so pack accordingly if you are going to do this. Fortunately, the power assist when you are pedaling more than makes up for the added weight of those batteries and most of your stuff, so even when rising a heavy mountain bike it may still feel like you are riding a light weight street bike.
Ebikes offer a great electric burst of speed and endurance. They are also very good for cross country as you can combine the shock absorption and great hill climbing capacity of a mountain bike with the light weight of a road bike after the electric pedal assist makes up for the added weight of the mountain bike completely. An electric mountain bike has some oomph to it.
They are great for commuting in areas with hills or rough terrain, giving you that extra power just when you need it the most, and they are also good for mountain bike trekking over long distances. With an ebike, you can enjoy the beauty of nature longer and easier without the polling exhaust other motorized or motor assisted cycles leave behind.
