What exactly are electric assist bicycles? It is none other than your regular everyday bike with a slight variation of an added electric motor to propel it. Meaning, it is electrically driven. In fact, it is considered as a wonder vehicle, very clean and efficient!
Most people would like to believe that the motor in it will do the trick of running the whole thing leaving the rider sitting idle. On the contrast it only assists the rider while going through rough terrain and flat ground. It is the best alternative to a car but with the added advantage of giving the rider enough exercise and speed of any degree.
An electric assist bikes has a rechargeable battery with a range of about 20 miles. However, the range will greatly depend on the types of terrain covered, the rider's style of riding, the size of the wheel and the nature of the bike. Electric bikes come in an array of styles and varied sizes. We have the smaller folding types with a wheel range of about 16 and 20 inch designed specifically for commuters and for people living in apartments and again the types where we have the wheel size of up to 28 and 700c inch. There is no requirement for a license or the need for an insurance policy only a certain age limit in most states.
Most electric assist bicycles use the hub motor containing two concentric rings having opposition electromagnets. This is either installed on the rear or the front of the wheels and is not operated on chains. Belts as well as gears are not a necessity either. On the application of power on the motor through the battery, the magnetic forces that oppose each other are making the wheel to go spinning. The type of motor used on such bicycles devoid of noise and maintenance is next to nil. The power of the motor depends on the motor's wattage.
It is governed by the Federal Law which limits to its usage of electricity up to 750 watts and a speed of 20 miles an hour. You will notice that most electric bikes are built in such a way that they meet the required specification but there are others that exceed the limits put. An electric bike generally can be built if you have $ 500 to $ 800 worth of kits but a new one will cost you around $ 400 to $ 3500. As with all purchases and more so for a vehicle what you get is what you pay for.
Being equipped with the right kind of battery in your bike is crucial. The most commonly used is the sealed lead acid batteries that are less expensive but provides the maximum ampere per hour. But the best option for you would be the lithium batteries because it weighs less and have longer life. Ecologically, they are by far the friendliest of all batteries available in the market.
Go the electric assist bicycles way and be a green transport pioneer. And help ease traffic congestion and save fuel for the next generation as you peddle along your daily life.
