Before doing any of this, you’ll need to find a skatepark. There are plenty of them around, and you can find where they are online. If you’re having trouble finding a skatepark, check out a local skateboard shop. The skateboarders there should be able to help you out.
After you have found a skatepark that you can skate at, you may want to go and check it out. Survey the park before skating. This will help you plan runs and also see what you’re in for. Surveying the skatepark is one of the best things you can do to help prepare yourself.
Plan to visit the skatepark early in the morning. The very first time you visit the skatepark, it will be scary. You won’t know exactly what you’re doing, and people skating all around you may make you nervous. Going to the skatepark early in the morning allows you a little bit of time to yourself.
Since you’re early, you’ll notice that there aren’t a whole lot of people in the skatepark. You may even be the only one. This is great because you won’t be running into people, and you won’t have the fear of being watched.
The worst feeling a new skater can have is the fear of being watched. It makes you feel like you’re putting on a show when there are other skaters at the skatepark. Many newcomers to the skatepark are intimidated by this.
There’s a good chance that the other skaters don’t care about what you’re doing, so long as you stay out of their way. If you run into other skateboarders, they’re probably going to start watching out for you, and not for your awesome tricks. Do the best you can to stay out of the way of other skateboarders.
Before you go out and skate, get your safety equipment together. Without safety equipment, you’re vulnerable to the concrete. You need to wear safety equipment because it keeps you safe from the hard surface below. It also adds a sense of protection, which allows you to skate harder.
It’s not a great idea to head straight to the skatepark if you haven’t skateboarded before. You should definitely practice skateboarding in your own neighborhood first, and then head to the skatepark after you get your balance and stance right.
Most skateboarders are used to the perfectly flat ground that their neighborhood is made out of. You will notice that there are obstacles at the skatepark, such as bowls or half pipes, which make skateboarding difficult again. You will want to try and tackle these objects slowly, a little bit at a time. Don’t hit a bowl going as fast as you can; you’ll probably crash.
Just take it easy. Go down a couple of inclines at slow speeds. Don’t forget to bend your knees. Also, try to have fun. If you fall, be prepared for it. Don’t let falling get the best of you.
Always avoid other skaters. They don’t want to run into you, and you probably don’t want to run into them. This is the main reason you would want to visit the skatepark in the morning. There are less obstacles for you to avoid.
Try not to get angry if you fall off. You’ll be doing that a lot. Don’t throw in the towel, either. Giving up early is not how you get better at skateboarding. The bottom line is to just have fun. Also, wear your safety gear!
